Unsealed cracks in asphalt pavement allow water to penetrate the pavement surface. This weakens the base and subbase, leading to raveling, pavement failures and more extensive repairs. When water penetrates the asphalt during the winter, the resulting damage during the freeze/thaw cycle can be catastrophic to the asphalt. Unsealed cracks also allow sand, dirt and other noncompressible substances to enter the crack.
